About Us - Gamma "HER"story

In February of 1943, a group of women met at Lewis College of Business

(formerly Lewis Business College) in Detroit, MI to discuss the need for an

organization that would support and promote opportunities for young

women who were striving for a better education. To meet this need,

Elizabeth Garner, an instructor at the college, assisted by her sister, Violet T. Lewis, Lewis

College of Business owner and president, founded Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. with the

following mission:

MISSION

To improve the economic, social and political status of all women; to encourage our

members to further their educational/vocational training and maintain progressive interest

in the value of humanity; to promote refinement and culture; to establish and maintain a

better relationship among women of all races and creeds and to be of greater service to our

community, our country and to each other.

Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. is a sisterhood of distinguished, congenial business and

professional women. Through their talents and qualities, members aid an cultivate higher

scholastic and ethical standards, provide social and recreational outlets, implement

enrichment programs for youth and administer services to people in need.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. is comprised of 48 graduate chapters, 6 undergraduate

chapters and 1 mixed chapter. In addition, there are Youth Auxiliaries (Rosebuds, Phi-Teens,

Cavaliers and Jr. Cavaliers) where graduate members are mentors to youth grades 5

through college freshmen. In addition, adult auxiliaries (Echoes and Sr. Cavaliers) exist to

allow participation in events without full membership.

Our organization offers both National and Local scholarships annually. We sponsor a youth

talent showcase, Artist of Tomorrow, to share their artistic expression and talents. There are

National Observances (e.g., Founder’s Day) as well as local chapter activities which support

our mission.

Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. has several national affiliates including — the National

Council of Negro Women (NCNW), NAACP, UNCF, A.O.I.L—National Assault on Illiteracy

Program, National Urban League (NUL) and the Detroit 300 Recognition Heritage Program .
